Torah Thoughts - Tennis, Anyone?
The U.S. Open, which begins on Monday, August 31 in Flushing, NY, is one of the main events in professional tennis. One of the biggest stars, Serena Williams, will vie for yet another championship. I read an interview with her recently, in which she revealed a secret her father Richard taught her. "He told me, 'Tennis is great, but put God first. Always be humble.'" I was moved that one of the world's great competitors understands that God is an integral part of her success.
As able as we are, there are times when we too need divine inspiration to reach our goals, or to persevere. Today is the first day of the Hebrew month Elul, one month before Rosh Hashanah. In our tradition this begins a period of introspection. I hope that we will remember the advice that guides Serena - it will help us too!
