Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee addresses various needs of our community.

Under the heading of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), we endeavor to lend a hand to help our synagogue family, our neighbors, and our community enjoy a better life by sharing our resources, our expertise, and ourselves.

SHARING OUR BOUNTY

Corners of Our Fields:
Our yearly Kol Nidre food drive generously supports our local food pantry.

Food Collection Site:
Receptacle is located in the synagogue lobby  and maintained throughout the year. Updates on urgently needed donations are listed in The Shofar monthly newsletter.

Community Giving Gardens:
“Gan Tikvah” and the “Giving Garden” are collaborative projects involving Temple Beth Ahm, Temple Shalom and the Matawan United Methodist Church. Our garden group grows and provides fresh organic produce to the food pantry clients of our community.

BRIDGING THE GENERATIONS

Helping residents of a local nursing home to celebrate the Jewish festivals by providing companionship and traditional holiday foods and symbols at Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Chanukah and Purim.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

As members of the larger community, we sponsor various programs including:

  • Blood drives (NJ Blood Services)
  • Coat drives (One Warm Coat Organization)
  • Clothing drives (Jersey Shore Rescue Mission)
  • Shoe drives (Jersey Shore Rescue Mission)
  • Bone marrow / stem cell drives (Gift of Life Marrow Registry)
  • Hospital visitation
  • Symposiums on issues affecting all of us, including domestic violence, substance abuse, health issues and awareness.

PROVIDING WARMTH:

Our knit & crochet group works together to help provide blankets to those in need through Warm Up America. After learning how to knit or crochet or refresh our skills, we can also make hats and scarves for our annual coat drive.
